Genuine Accessories Vs Aftermarket
Motor dealers will always tell you their product is the best option for your vehicle however you should always compare with other available options on the market. In our experience genuine accessories are designed to a price point as a priority over functionality.
In most cases Genuine Accessories are more expensive than aftermarket also. How is this possible you ask? It is simple. The Car Company contracts a third party to make the parts. The part manufacturer sells those parts to the Car Company who then sells them to the motor dealership. The motor Dealership’s parts department then marks them up to the sales team who then in turn mark them up to you – everyone making a margin on the way through.
It is important to consider functionality when comparing Genuine and Aftermarket accessories. Take bull bars for example – when considering a genuine bar as is it winch compatible? Does it have inbuilt rated recovery points? Will the driving lights I want fit in the bar? How will it stand up to an animal strike?
Another little known fact is that some accessories sold as Genuine Accessories are actually Aftermarket Accessories simply rebadged as Genuine. Towbars and roof racks often fall into this category with companies such as Rhino Rack and Hayman Reece manufacturing Roof Racks and Towbars for both the Genuine and Aftermarket Sector.
When you consider facts like these it makes scare campaigns like the one below seem silly.
